Dean Kamen – the Crusader!

The Man

Dean Kamen, a household name in the medical device industry, is the holder of more than 150 U.S. and international patents. Although a college drop out, his passion and propensity towards science and technology has made him one of the most successful inventors in medical device history. When a helicopter manufacturer refused to customize a helicopter for his everyday use, he went on to buy the company and later sold it with a thumping profit. He has two helicopters which he uses to commute.

What is this blog about?

Biomed.blog.com is a platform for current topics of interest to the biotech and medical device industries. Issues are discussed from the point of view of innovations and patent protections. Innovation by itself is not enough to ensure a successful product. The biotech and medtech industries would not have existed if not for patent protection. This blog will be of interest to product development managers, engineers, scientists and patent lawyers. This forum provides a general discourse and discussion in issues related to Freedom to Operate and Propriety Positions.

The blog will be updated by Casey Chan MD, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and the Division of Bioengineering at the National University of Singapore. Dr. Chan has 15 years experience in product development and in patent filing. He is also an inventor and a consultant to several orthopedic equipment manufacturers in the United States. A bone cement mixing system he designed is widely used in joint replacement surgery in the United States. He has 35 U.S. patents in the area of surgical devices and has 10 other patents pending. He is trained as an orthopedic surgeon and also has a Masters degree in aerospace engineering. He participates in angel investing and advises a number of biotech and medical device start-ups in the Bay area. He is co-founder and CEO of WizPatent, an independent software and service company that provides intellectual property support for technology companies, patent attorney firms, legal firms and venture capital companies. He is also co-founder and former CEO of a successful e-learning company called WizLearn. He is a co-founder of HUMANYX,a monoclonal antibody company.
